A Small Lineup, With One Big Exception

After two quarters of play in Game 5 of their Eastern Conference playoff series, the New York Knicks have a 40-34 lead over the Indiana Pacers. Indiana leads the series, 3-1.

That, in part, allowed the Knicks to awake from their offensive slumber, which is a scary thing for Indiana going forward. Mike Woodson's use of his own bench was another key. Jason Kidd and Amar'e Stoudemire each played

Elimination hovered over the Knicks, menacingly, like the cartoon version of death, waving his pointed sickle, threatening their postseason existence. The end seemed near Thursday night, with only the details to be determined and the last rites recited.

Don't worry, Knick fans: J.R. Smith didn't pull a John Starks. The Knicks' high-scoring sixth man's struggles had grown so great that on Wednesday he was taking advice from Starks, the franchise's cold-shooting goat in Game 7 of the 1994 NBA Finals.
