Turns out that one of the best Derby Day traditions is one you can stir up for yourself right at home: the classic Kentucky mint julep. Traditionally served in a chilled silver cup, this simple bourbon cocktail packs a lot of punch.

The 139th running of the Kentucky Derby is today. More than 160000 spectators are expected to attend. Security is especially tight this year, due to the Boston marathon bombings. All backpacks and coolers are now banned.

Forget the bourbon. The first ingredient in the famed Kentucky Derby mint julep is, well, mint. Native spearmint, if you're cultivating at home.
